Georgetown Water Utility advanced meter upgrades

Water Meter Upgrade Project Update

What’s Happening?

Georgetown Water Utility customers are getting an upgraded water metering system by late 2025. The Water Utility is installing an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system, featuring 23,500 smart meters, by September 2025.

Where and How?

Expect to see our dedicated personnel, alongside subcontractors, working on meters in your area. Look out for a door hanger letting you know your meter has been upgraded! A brief interruption of service will occur during the installations of the new meters.

Benefits of AMI Technology:

Starting in late 2024, upgraded meter customers will gain access to live usage data through the Consumption Portal in the online billing system.

With the new advanced system, upgraded meters, and Consumption Portal you will be able to track your usage, adjust your habits, detect leaks, and make informed decisions about your water consumption!
Additionally, the implementation of advanced technology will allow the Water Utility to access live water usage data remotely and eliminate the need for manual, drive-by meter readings.

FAQs

Is there a way to find out when my area’s water will be briefly interrupted?

A door hanger will be placed on the residence at the time the work is completed. We anticipate outages to last for only a brief amount of time.

Can you opt-put of the new meters?

Water customers cannot opt out of the meter upgrade. Smart meters are an industry standard and provide a more comprehensive method for monitoring water usage. Smart meters have been used in parts of Georgetown’s water system for many years.

What is the future individual billing cost to pay for meters?

Individual meters have not been broken out as a cost on individual bills.

If I will not be using the smart meter merits, why should I pay for it?

Smart meters are the standard across the utility industry. They help to better manage and understand how resources are being used. Half of the service territory already has smart meters. These upgrades to remaining customers will help save money in the long term by eliminating the need for drive-by meter reads or manual meter reads.

The additional insight into water usage from smart meters allows the Georgetown Water Utility to make strategic decisions and plans, provide quality customer service, and help educate customers on water usage and conservation. Additionally, smart meters allow the Water Utility to notify customers when continuous water use is detected so water bills are not impacted by potential leaks.

Does this upgrade give the utility the ability to control my water usage?

The upgraded smart water meters only give usage reads. They do not have the ability to remote disconnect for nonpayment.

Will this include newer Sun City homes in Georgetown?

All homes without smart meters will be retrofitted with smart meters, including those in Sun City.

Will there be any way to be notified in advance if our home is on the list to be upgraded?

Most meter upgrades take fewer than 30 minutes and are done during regular business hours. City of Georgetown technicians do meter replacements regularly for maintenance purposes. Prior to beginning the work, the technician will knock on the front door to inform them of the maintenance.

The primary mass change-out will begin in September 2024. The contractor will send post cards in advance.

Do smart meters emit electro-magnetic fields?

According to our smart meter vendor, Sensus, radiofrequency (RF) energy produced by smart meters is not harmful and is comparable to cellular phone devices, wireless baby monitors, television broadcasts, garage door openers, microwave ovens, cordless home phones, and WiFi networks. In addition, because Sensus metering systems communicate over licensed spectrum, they are in complete compliance with FCC rules and regulations.
